Agost 17. Rodriguez wins his 9th PSA

You don't only have to give everything in court to win, you have to feel like a winner. This was certainly the attitude the Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez imposed in order to win his 9th PSA title.This is the first time the Colombian wins a 3 stars tournament.

The first game was full of rhythm, speed and suprises. This allowed Rodriguez to take the advantage yet in the second game, Baltazar proposed a different strategy, moving his rival, forcing him to make mistakes and winning shots with his cross court drop and killer boasts. The match was tied up, but the Colombian entered the third game with a winning attitude and executed exceptional shots that won him the game.

The advantage was clear but the Colombian had to enter the fourth game to win. He was convinved, agressive and played with risk. The match ended with numerous applauses of 500 spectators who gave their love and caring for the Colombian who won the PSA title in his own club.

Agosto 17. Rodríguez gana su 9no título PSA

Para ganar no basta poner todo en la cancha, hay que sentirse ganador. Esa fue la premisa que le permitió al colombiano Miguel Angel Rodríguez ganar su 9no. título de la PSA, al conquistar el Abierto Colombiano y ganar por primera vez en su carrera un torneo 3 estrellas.

Para el primer game un ritmo vertiginoso, de velocidad y sorpresa hizo que Rodríguez lograra ponerse en ventaja, pero en el segundo game, Baltazar se aplicó a proponer una estrategia diferente, moviendo a su rival, forzándolo a errar y ganando bolas en su golpe preferido de drop por el revés y de dos paredes al nick por el drive. Parcialmente el juego se emparejó, pero entró al tercero el colombiano con una convicción ganadora que hizo posible ejecutar golpes ganadores en una verdadera colección de definiciones excepcionales.

La ventaja era clara. Pero había que entrar a definir. Rodríguez lo hizo de la mejor manera. Entró decidido, agresivo, profundo y tomando los riesgos de sentirse confiado en sus definiciones. Llegó el final con el aplauso cerrado de cerca de 500 espectadores que le brindaron su cariño a este excepcional deportista colombiano que les brindó a su público y a su Club un título PSA que apenas hace 5 años era un sueño que parecía inalcanzable.

Agost 16. After two intense battles in court, Baltazar and Rodrgiez reached the final.

Baltazar(Mex) – Gálvez (Mex)

With a deep and consistent game Baltazar won the first game, yet in the second game Galvez tied up the game as he changed the rhythm, played faster and with more precision. Nevertheless, Galvez’s physical condition seemed to take advantage as the following two games the match consisted of close contact and intrusion. It was the close contact balls that began to to frustrate Galvez making him more anxious and as result, committed more unforced erros that cost him the match. During 84 minutes Baltazar and Galvez played vibrating squash. The final score was 3-1

Rodríguez(Col) – Salazar(Mex)

The 99 minutes match was both emotive and surprising. Never in the 11 editions of the Colombian Open did two players combated like today. Both players seemed gladiators.

Salazar won the first and third game in less than 90 minutes. The second game lasted 44 minutes in a vibrating tie break that seemed eternal at times. Just when all the public thought the fourth game was going to be won by the Mexican, the Colombian displayed his upmost level and courage winning the game.

Rodriguez only needed 18 minutes to define the following two games and win the match- With a tied score, 2-2 the solvency and mentality made the difference. Miguel Angel waited patiently and fabricated winner drop shots and cross court balls that made the audience yell intensely.

Agosto 16. Tras dos batallas en la cancha, Baltazar y Rodríguez conquistaron la final

Baltazar(Mex) – Gálvez (Mex)

Con un juego de fondo, con bolas que permanente buscaron el vidrio, Baltazar logró sacar ventaja en el primer game, pero en el segundo, Gálvez cambió el ritmo, sacó el juego de la monotonía de la bola atrás, fue más rápido y preciso y logró igualar. Pero el fondo físico parecía sacarle ventaja a Gálvez, cuando en los dos siguientes se quedaba siempre en la jugada, generando infinidad de contactos físicos, que siempre se resolvieron en favor de Baltazar, quien mostraba más calma para enfrentar la dificultad del contacto. Esa situación fue marcando la diferencia, Gálvez lució por momentos ansioso y sin distancia para el control y varios errores no forzados, combinados con bolas de riesgo, definieron el game definitivo en un tie break. 84 minutos de vibrante squash para consolidar a Baltazar como la gran revelación del Abierto Colombiano. 3-1

Emotivo, vistoso y sorprendente son los calificativos para el mejor juego del torneo en 99 minutos extenuantes. Nunca en las 11 ediciones del evento en Colombia, el público observó dos jugadores que se prodigaran en la cancha como lo hicieron este par de gladiadores.

Salazar ganó el 1ro y el 3ro en nada menos que 70 minutos. El segundo game, para irse adelante 2-1 duró nada menos que 44 minutos en un tie break que lucía por momentos eterno. Y cuando todos esperaban que el cuarto fuera para quien acumuló el game de mayor disputa, el colombiano sacó su clase, su prestigio, la valentía para responderle a un público expectante.

Fue inmenso el contraste de tiempo, mientras Salazar había tenido que emplear 70 minutos para ganar sus dos games, Rodríguez tan solo necesitó de 18 minutos para los suyos. Con el 2-2 en el papel, la solvencia y la mentalidad podían hacer la diferencia. Eso sucedió en el game definitivo, con un Miguel Angel que esperó paciente para fabricar bolas ganadoras en el drop y la cruzada al fondo para generar un triunfo que arrancó los gritos emocionados de la tribuna. La propuesta técnica de Salazar fue de una calidad extraordinaria, pero la capacidad física y el cambio de velocidad que propuso Rodríguez cuando se vio en desventaja, no le permieron sumar dos games seguidos y esa fue la clave para un partido inolvidable. Qué gran squash se vivió en El Nogal en este histórico 16 de agosto. 3-2

El inglés se mueve con una enorme facilidad, gran nivel y categoría y una exquisita técnica, pero no logró definir una estrategia de ataque frente a la convicción ganadora del mexicano que fue juntando los puntos necesarios con una notable propuesta de despliegue físico y constante presión con drops muy precisos. El gran valor de Baltazar es que se prodiga, como pocos, por toda la cancha, sin dar por perdido nunca un punto. 3-0

Salazar (Mex) - Illingworth(USA).

Both the Mexican and American played an exceptional quarterfinal match. Illingworth, No.1 player in his country entered the match with confidence and with a clear strategy and minimal unforced errors. However, the remarkable speed and power to surprise by the Mexican caused him incredible difficulty. Salazar won the first game after a vibrant tie break, yet the American took control over the second game and tied up the match. However, in the third game the Mexican played a variety of shots and long rallies and won. By the final game the American couldn’t find a way to undermine the Mexicans strategy and lost. The score was 3-1.

Gálvez (Mex) – Samper (Col).

This classical match between both continental players has always been close yet the Mexican has won most of the matches. Samper played a good game with constant rhythm changes and precise drop shots, yet his unforced errors became his frustration that was defeated by the constant speed responses and precision imposed by the Mexican. The final score 3-0

Agosto 15. Dos mexicanos avanzan a semifinales

Salazar (Mex) - Illingworth(USA). Un excepcional encuentro protagonizaron el mexicano y el norteamericano en la apertura de cuartos de final. Illingworth, No. 1 de su país, entró firme y seguro en su estrategia de consistencia, seguridad y poquísimos errores no forzados, pero la notable velocidad y sorpresa del mexicano lo pusieron en serios aprietos. Cuatro games ampliamente disputados generaron para Salazar un juego en el que logró ganar el primer game tras un vibrante tie break, después el norteamericano entró a presionar y logró su objetivo al igualar, pero en la disputa del tercer game el juego quedó sentenciado, con un planteamiento de gran variedad de golpes, donde los rallys largos siempre finalizar a favor de Salazar. El tercer game fue de largo aliento y el desgaste de Illingworth evidente, al punto que no tuvo fondo para lograr buscar la igualdad en el cuarto. 3-1

Gálvez (Mex) – Samper (Col). Este clásico del squash continental escribió otra página en la larga disputa que ha sido más exitosa para el mexicano. Samper puso su mejor juego, con cambios de ritmo y bolas ganadoras importantes en drop, pero los errores no forzados marcaron el camino de la frustración para el talentoso colombiano, que se vio superado con respuestas de velocidad y precisión por parte de Gálvez. 3-0

August 14th. Baltazar, Kenny, Grant and Rodríguez advanced to the next round.

Baltazar (Mex)- Alarcón (Bra) – The rallies of the first game where so long and intense that the audience was left exhausted. They played all the possible shots during the match. Although Alarcon had the advantage at the beginning he couldn’t find a way to close the game and therefore had to play a extended tie break. The second game was just as long as the first and once again the Mexican Baltazar, with security and speed reached the toughest shots and won the match. The final score was 3-0.

Kenny(Irl) - Binns (Wal) – Consistency is the key to win at this squash level and this became clearer in the match of the Walish Binns and the experimented I

rish Kenny. The two first games where close but the consecutive errors made by Binns, gave the Irish the advantage. After this, Binns demonstrated his best squash despite the physical strain and variety of his shots. The score became tighter and in the final game he took a deep breath and finished the match. The final score was 3-1.

Grant(Eng) – McDougall(Can). The No. 1 seed of the tournament the English Grant, looking more acustiomed to the altitude generated multiple balls to defeat the resistance of the Canadian McDougall. The Canadian pressured the English constantly winning the first game yet the English took over the match with constant balls and excellent shots. The final score was 3-1.

Rodríguez (Col) – Schonborn(RSD). Inspired by his club and his public, the Colombian Rodríguez exhibited his best level and defeated the South-African who proved to be the best player of the qualy. Although the South-African played solidly, Rodriguez imposed his variety of balls, speeds and defined the shots in the right time winning over the South-African. The final score was 3-0.

Baltazar (Mex)- Alarcón ( Bra) –Fueron tan largos los rallys del primer game que el público quedaba exhausto cuando terminaba cada bola. Jugaron todos los golpes, la más amplia variedad de squash estaba en la cancha. Y aunque Alarcón tenía la ventaja al inicio no encontró la manera de cerrar y un largo tie break marcó el rumbo del partido. El segundo game fue igual de largo y otra vez el mexicano Baltazar, con seguridad y velocidad para llegar a las bolas más difíciles sentenció el juego a su favor. Para el tercer game ya Alarcón se había jugado todo. 3-0

Kenny(Irl) - Binns (Wal) – La consistencia hace la diferencia en este nivel y eso quedó claro en el juego del gales Binns y el experimentado irlandés Kenny. Los dos primeros games fueron parejos, pero en el remate los errores de Binns jugaron en favor del irlandés. Después Binns hizo su mejor squash, pero con una notable desgaste, aunque empleo mejor la variedad de sus golpes. Redujo la diferencia, pero entró con poco aire al definitivo y aunque hizo un game apretado, Kenny tuvo más fondo para rematar uno de los mejores juegos del día. 3-1

Grant(Eng) – McDougall(Can). Logrando una mejor adaptación a la altura de Bogotá, el sembrado No. 1, el inglés Grant, exhibiendo un squash exquisito y de gran nivel generó múltiples bolas ganadoras para vencer la resistencia del canadiense McDougall, llegado desde el qualy. Pero no fue un juego de trámite, el joven de Canadá presionó constantemente al inglés, le ganó el primer game y debió emplearse a fondo para hacer grandes bolas que fueron ampliamente aplaudidas por el público reunido en la cancha 6 de El Nogal. 3-1

Rodríguez (Col) – Schonborn(RSD). Inspirado en su público y en su club, el colombiano Rodríguez exhibió un squash de alto nivel para dar cuenta del sólido sudafricano, quien fue claramente el mejor jugador de la clasificación. Inteligente, equilibrado y con un muy buen nivel que lo tienen entre los mejores 100 del mundo, inquietó al colombiano, pero pudo más la variedad de golpes, la velocidad y la definición para generar los puntos necesarios que le permitieran avanzar a la segunda ronda. 3-0

Galvez defeated Cesar Salazar due to his experience once again. This is the third time Salazar advances to the main draw, two times in Colombia and one in Ecuador, yet he always faces Galvez. Despite this, he hasn’t figured out the way to win. Although it was an emotive game and widely disputed, Galvez always imposed his rhythm. Salazar only threatened his supremacy in the final game, where he showed his constant improvement and talent. The final score was 3-0.

Illingworth(USA) – Martínez (Mex)

The Mexican Martinez reached his goal when he advanced to the main draw, yet he pressured and moved Illingworth all around the court making it a difficult first round match for the American. Illingworth had to make an effort to finish the match. Although the games where close, Illingworth imposed his experience to finish the games in the right time and is now prepared for the next round that will be tougher.

Samper (Col) – Gordon (USA). The opening match of the main draw was very technical, played to the back and with long rallies that were strongly disputed. Gordon began playing to the back and with successive fast attacks, forcing Samper to make errors. Nevertheless Samper found a way to win in the second game by combining deep cross-court balls and precise drops that wore out the American. The final score was 3-1.

Salazar (Mex)– Salinas(Col). The young Mexican Arturo Salazar closed all the opportunities the Colombian Salinas had to advance to the next round after playing long deep rallies during the match. The Colombian Salinas was granted the wild card after winning the Masters International. The Mexican forced the Colombians physical condition that ultimately granted him the match. Nuevamente la experiencia de Gálvez generó un triunfo más sobre César Salazar. Dos veces en Colombia y una en Ecuador, Salazar ha logrado avanzar del qualy al draw y siempre su rival ha sido Gálvez, pero hasta ahora no ha logrado encontrar la manera de ganarle. El juego fue emotivo, ampliamente disputado, pero impuso siempre el ritmo Gálvez. Solo en el game final Salazar amenazó la supremacía, pero nos dejó una muestra de su permanente ascenso y calidad de juego. 3-0.

El mexicano Martínez había cumplido de lejos su objetivo al llegar al cuadro principal, pero no obstante presionó y movió a Illingworth, quien no tuvo un juego fácil de primera ronda. El Norteamericano tuvo que hacer su mejor esfuerzo para definir en un juego que al promediar los tres games siempre estuvo parejo. Illingworth supo imponer su experiencia para cerrar los games en el momento oportuno y mentalizarse ahora para una nueva ronda que será muy exigente.

Agosto 14. Samper y Salazar primeros ganadores

Samper (Col) – Gordon (USA). El juego de apertura del cuadro principal fue muy técnico, profundo y con rallys largos y ampliamente disputados, Gordon impuso condiciones al inicio con bolas profundas y sucesivas respuestas de velocidad, forzando errores de su rival, pero Samper encontró desde el segundo game su mejor juego, combinando bolas cruzadas profundas con certeros drops que desgataron al norteamericano, sellando la primera alegría para el público local. Marcador final 3-1

Salazar (Mex)– Salinas(Col). Con una propuesta de juego profundo, el joven mexicano Salazar le cerró la puerta al colombiano Salinas, quien gracias a su título en el Masters International, fue favorecido con la tarjeta de invitación del torneo. El juego atrás, con cambios de ritmo y poquísimas bolas adelante hicieron mella en la condición física del colombiano, quien lució agotado y no logró encontrar la manera de sorprender a este gran jugador de México. 3-0

August 13th. The final qualifiers are defined

Two Mexicans, one South-African and one Canadian reached the main draw of the Colombian Open after winning this afternoon. The Mexicans Salazar and Martinez, the South-African Schonborn and the Canadian McDougall reached the main draw.

The experience of the South-African ranked No. 98 and the third best player of his country vanished the opportunities of the local players to enter the main draw. Although the talent of Rodrigo Torres was exhibited during the match, it wasn’t enough to defeat the South-African who won 3-1.

The 20 year old Canadian, Andrew McDougall imposed his trajectory and experience as a junior and won against the Colombian Nelson Amaya, 3-0.

The 19 year old Canadian, Tyler Hamilton couldn’t defeat the consistency of the Mexican Salvador Martinez, who was rewarded with an important promotion in the ranking, who won 3-0. This is the first time the Mexican obtains a spot in the main draw.

Finally the 20 year old Mexican, Cesar Salazar defeated the Colombian Manuel Caro in a comfortable match with score 3-0.

Agosto 13. Definido el qualy del abierto colombiano.

Dos mexicanos, un sudafricano y un canadiense llegaron al cuadro principal del Abierto Colombiano al cerrase hoy el cuadro de clasificación. Los mexicanos Salazar y Martínez, el Sudáfricano Schonborn y el canadiense McDougall conquistaron los puestos del cuadro principal.

La experiencia del sudafricano, No. 98 del mundo y el tercer mejor jugador de su país, fue el acicate para frenar las intenciones locales de entrar en el cuadro principal con otro jugador nacional, pues el talento de Rodrigo Torres, aunque se exhibió claramente en el juego, no fue suficiente para ganar el cupo. El resultado final fue 3-1.

El joven canadiense de 20 años, Andrew McDougall impuso su largo recorrido y experiencia junior para dejar en el camino a otra de las esperanzas de Colombia en el qualy, Nelson Amaya. El resultado final fue 3-0.

El otro joven canadiense, Tyler Hamilton, de 19 años, no logró encontrar su mejor juego y fue superado por la consistencia del mexicano Salvador Martínez, quien será recompensado con un importante ascenso en el ranking, al llegar por primera vez al cuadro principal de un gran torneo. Martínez venció 3-0.

Finalmente el juego entre el mexicano de 20 años, César Salazar y la otra carta colombiana Manuel Caro fue muy claro para el mexicano quien se acomodó en el cuadro principal al superar 3-0 a Caro.

Con el entusiasmo de jugadores internacionales y locales se inició este medio día el qualy del 11avo. Abierto Colombiano PA, Copa Squash, el cual dejó definidas las cuatro llaves que mañana definirán los jugadores que ingresarán a la disputa del cuadro principal.

El sudafricano Regardt Schonborn y el colombiano Rodrigo Torres prometen el mejor juego de la definición del cuadro clasificatorio en el juego de fondo de la jornada que inician los dos jóvenes jugadores de Canadá Hamilton y Mcdougall, quienes tendrán como rivales al colombiano Nelson Amaya y al mexicano Salvador Martínez, respectivamente. Los dos juegos muestran niveles parejos y la definición será de grata emotividad.

La otra llave la disputarán el mexicano César Salazar frente al colombiano Manuel Caro, con favoritismo para el gemelo Salazar.

July 24th. The Draw is set. Classic matches in the first round.

Excellent classic matches are guaranteed in the tournaments first round. The first four seeded players Adrian Grant, Miguel Rodriguez, Eric Galvez and Julian Illingworth will wait for the four qualifiers.

Alarcón – Baltazar. The first of the classic matches will face Brazils No. 1 player Rafael Alarcón against the Mexican Jorge Baltazar who has escalated in the PSA rankings in the last months. The 31 year old Alarcon, considered one of the most consistent player with more than 30 months in the top 50 players of the world will play against the Mexican who at age 26 and with only 3 years in the PSA tour reached the top 60 players in only 12 months. Both players have met in 3 matches, 2 for Baltazar and 1 for Alarcon. The match will be held on Thursday, August 14th at 6pm.

Samper – Gordon. This match will have the quality and talent of the 26 year old Colombian based in New York, who always surprises in his country against solid 22 year old American who consistently assists the PSA tour. They have only played once in a PSA event and Gordon won. It will be the match of talent and creativity versus solidity and consistency. The match will be held on Thursday, August 14th at 12pm.

Salazar – Salinas. Experience agaisnt youth. Another classical game between the 30 year old Colombian Salinas, former No. 1 of the country who was awarded with the wild card due to his presentation in the Masters International Bogota 2008. He will go against the 20 year old Mexican Arturo Salazar who has also proven his talent rising in the PSA rankings. He has ascended from No.344 in December 2006 to No. 70 which is his current ranking. He is one of the youngest promises of continental squash. This match will be held on Thursday, August 14 at 1pm.

Binns – Kenny. The Welsh’s charisma will come against the coldness and experience of the Irish. This will be the first visit to Colombia from the 24 year old Welsh Binns who will face the experimented and cold Irish, Liam Kenny, who at age 30 is the indisputable No.1 player of his country and has competed for more than 9 years in the PSA tour. This match will be held on Thursday, August 14th at 5pm.

Juegos clásicos de excelente nivel quedaron garantizados en la apertura del cuadro principal, tras conocerse hoy el sorteo realizado por la PSA de los jugadores sembrados. Los cuatro primeros sembrados Adriant Grant, Miguel Rodríguez, Eric Gálvez y Julian Illingworth esperarán por los cuatro jugadores que llegarán del qualy.

Alarcón – Baltazar. El primero de los juegos clásicos enfrentará al No. 1 de Brasil Rafael Alarcón contra el mexicano Jorge Baltazar, uno de los jugadores de mayor crecimiento en los últimos meses en PSA. Alarcón con 31 años es uno de los jugadores profesionales de mayor regularidad, con más de 30 meses en los mejores 50 jugadores del mundo, en tanto que el mexicano Baltazar con 26 años y con apenas tres años sucesivos en PSA en solo 12 meses llegó hasta los 60 mejores del mundo. En PSA se han enfrentado 3 veces, con dos triunfos para Baltazar y uno para Alarcón. Un juego de pronóstico reservado. Jueves 14 de agosto a las 6 pm.

Samper – Gordon. Este será un juego de gran calidad con el talentoso colombiano de 26 años, radicado en New York, quien llega siempre a sorprender en su país y el sólido norteamericano de 22 años, uno de los más asiduos asistentes a los tornes del tour PSA. Los dos ocupan la segunda plaza como nacionales en sus respectivos países. Se han enfrentado solo en una ocasión en PSA y el triunfo fue para Gordon. Será el juego del talento y la creatividad frente a la solidez y consistencia. Otro pronóstico reservado. Jueves 14 de agosto a las 12 pm.

Salazar – Salinas. La experiencia frente a la juventud. Otro juego clásico entre el colombiano Salinas de 30 años, exnúmero 1 del país y premiado con la wild card gracias a su excelente presentación en el reciente Masters International Bogotá 2008 y uno de los juveniles de mayor progreso en la PSA el mexicano Arturo Salazar que a sus 20 años ya se metió entre os 100 mejores del mundo. Hoy ocupa el puesto 70 en una magnífica proyección del puesto 344 en diciembre de 2006 al 70 de la actualidad. Es una de las grandes promesas del squash continental. Jueves 14 de agosto a las 1 pm.

Binns – Kenny. Carisma del gales frente a la frialdad y experiencia del irlandés. En su primera visita a Colombia, el carismático gales Binns de 24 años tendrá un fuertísimo rival en el experimentado y frío irlandés Liam Kenny, quien a sus 30 años es el indiscutido No. 1 de su país con más de 9 años en el tour PSA, cuyo mejor puesto fue el 31 el año anterior. Julio 17. Vuelve el PSA a El Nogal. Los mejores jugadores del mundo vuelven a la escena de los mejores en las canchas el Club El Nogal cuando entre el 12 y 18 de Agosto se celebre la versión 11 del Abierto Colombiano.

Las estrellas internacionales serán encabezadas por el inglés Adrian Grant No. 14 del mundo, quien será la siembra 1 del evento. El español Borja Golán, el colombiano Miguel Rodríguez y el francés Renan Lavigne completa el cupo de los cuatro sembrados del evento PSA más relevante del continente, que está vez entregará premios por 30 mil dólares.

July 17th. The PSA returns to El Nogal Club.

The world’s best players will return to the courts of El Nogal Club between the 12th and 18th of August when the 11th version of the Colombian Open is celebrated.

The international stars will be led by the Englishman Adrian Grant No. 14 PSA, who will be the first seed of the tournament. The Spanish Borja Golan, the Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez and the French Renan Lavigne complete the top four seeded players, which will compete for the prize of USD$30,000.

Julio 17. Salinas recibe Wild Card. El colombiano Mauricio Salinas, del registro del Club El Nogal, recibió la inviotación para jugar el cuadro principal del torneo por decisión de los organizadores, quienes decidieron premiar la grata actuación del bogotano en el International Masters Squash Open Bogota 2008, cuando logró el título de la máxima categoría.

Mauricio Salinas received the wild card to play in the main draw due to his outstanding performance in the International Masters Squash Open Bogota 2008, where he won the maximum category.

Julio 17. Torneo Invitacional Paralelo. La organización del Abierto Colombiano convocó a un torneo invitacional paralelo al PSA que se llevará a cabo en la categorías junior, senior y primera profesional para varones. Los inscritos en el evento tiene garantizado su ingreso a los partidos estelares de PSA.

The organization of the Colombian Open convened a parallel invitational tournament for the junior and senior categories and Men’s first category. The entered players will have all-access to the PSA matches.
